Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM)

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum holds the distinction of being oldest and first of its kind Science & Technology Museum in India. Since its inauguration on May 2nd, 1959, it has served as the pivotal institution for India’s science centre movement. This achievement owes its genesis to the visionary Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, whose foresight sparked the initiative and the benevolent Birla family whose generous donation of a palatial building made the India’s first Science & Technology Museum a reality. BITM has ardently pursued its primary mission to promote scientific temper and informal hands-on science education. Since its inception, BITM has undergone expansion and played a pivotal role in establishment of world’s largest network of science centres, the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) in 1978. NCSM is actively creating a nationwide infrastructure in science communication and the informal science learning. The number of visitors to the NCSM 25 science centres has consistently risen with an annual participation of 21 million individuals in NCSM’s engagement and outreach programmes.
